Hair Loss Myths

hair-248048_1920Hair loss is a nuisance that many have to face at some point in their life. Having something to blame for this situation is often a sense of relief, however many of the “causes” people believe are responsible for their hair loss are not causes at all. Below we’ve outline some of the commonly mistaken myths about the causes of hair loss and why they are just that, myths.

Hats – Many blame hats for hair loss and avoid them all together to prevent future hair loss. This habit derives from the misconstruction that wearing hats decreases the amount of oxygen you scalp gets, therefore letting it “breathe less.” However, oxygen circulated in the blood is how follicles get oxygen.
Decreased Blood Flow – While you do see less blood flow to the scalp in those who are bald or balding, it is actually an outcome of hair loss because less blood is needed to circulate in the scalp when there is less hair.
High Testosterone Levels – Close, but not accurate. A hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in high levels can contribute to hair loss, but will affect only hair follicles that are pre-disposed genetically. DHT stimulates follicles to shrink.
Shampooing Frequently – Many fear the hair they see going down the drain with each shampoo, and this has resulted in the common myth that shampooing frequently plays a role in hair loss. Shampoo will not affect your roots, so most of those strands of hair coming out are hairs that naturally came to the end of their cycle or were already loose.
